You've got it. That one video. Your child takes their first few steps, falls, laughs, gets back up. You hit record and the moment is captured.
Three years later you go looking for that video. You want to show it to your child, to the grandparents who weren't there, to friends at a birthday party. You scroll through your camera roll. You search in Google Photos. You check three WhatsApp groups. It's nowhere to be found.
You never deleted it. It just never ended up anywhere you could find it again.
How most parents "save" baby videos
This is how most parents do it:
- Video recorded on a phone
- Sometimes sent to family on WhatsApp
- Somewhere in iCloud or Google Photos, maybe
- No folder, no label, no story
The result: the video exists, but you can't find it. After a year or two you no longer remember the date, or the room where it happened, or whether it was the first time or the fifth.
Change phones, close an account or lose your phone, and the video might really be gone.
Three ways your videos are getting lost right now
1. Camera roll: no context
Your camera app saves everything, with no story attached. A video of the first steps looks exactly the same as a video of a random Tuesday. There's no way to tag it as a "milestone" and no way to write down what was going on that day. In five years you simply won't know any more.
2. Google Photos / iCloud: searchable but not meaningful
Google Photos is a fine backup. You can search by date, but not for "first steps". Keeping a timeline per child isn't part of it. And everything sits on American servers, which for some parents is a privacy concern.
3. WhatsApp: shared but fleeting
WhatsApp groups are perfect for sharing the moment. As an archive they're useless. Messages are compressed (lower video quality), disappear into long chat histories, and can't be searched by content. If the grandparents didn't save the message, it's gone.
What a baby video app does differently
An app made specifically for keeping your child's memories does more than just store files:
- A timeline per child. All videos and photos in order, per child, chronologically.
- Milestones. The first steps are marked as "first steps" rather than "video 2847".
- Adding context. A short bit of text with each video: what was happening, exactly how old your child was.
- Secure storage. European servers, no advertising profile of your child.
- Safe sharing with grandparents. Through a private link that only your family has.
Ouderliefde: made for parents in the Netherlands
Ouderliefde is a Dutch app, built for exactly this problem. You upload photos and videos to your child's timeline, mark milestones and add context. Grandparents get access through their own secure link, which can't be guessed and which you can revoke at any time.
Everything is stored on European servers. The app is available in English and Dutch. You can add a co-parent so you can both upload and watch videos.
There's also a time capsule feature: write a letter to your child that only becomes visible on a date in the future. Their 18th birthday, their first day at school, whenever you like.
