Tinybeans stores the memories of more than 4 million families worldwide. For parents in the Netherlands it comes with a few concrete drawbacks, and they're worth taking seriously.
Where Tinybeans falls short for parents in the Netherlands
The app is entirely in English
Tinybeans has no Dutch interface and no Dutch memory prompts. There's no Sinterklaas reminder, no King's Day photo, no first swimming certificate as a milestone. The app was made for an English-speaking audience, and you notice it on every screen.
Data is stored outside Europe
Tinybeans is an Australian company and processes data outside the European Union. The company says it complies with the GDPR. Transferring data outside the EU does require extra safeguards, though, and is harder to check than storage within Europe. If you want to be sure your child's photos never leave Europe, look at where a service keeps its servers. With Ouderliefde, that's the EU.
The free version keeps getting more limited
The free version of Tinybeans shows adverts, and some of the features sit behind a paywall. The premium subscription is also priced in dollars, which for European users means exchange rates and sometimes extra charges from your bank. Check the current terms on their website, as they change fairly regularly.
No support for co-parenting
Tinybeans is designed around the traditional family set-up. There's no feature that lets both parents contribute to the same diary for their child from two different homes. For the growing group of co-parents in the Netherlands, that makes the app unsuitable.
Tinybeans alternatives that are built for the Netherlands
Ouderliefde: Dutch, GDPR-compliant and ready for co-parents
Ouderliefde is a Dutch app, built specifically for the Dutch market. The interface is available in English and Dutch, the cultural context is right (Sinterklaas, King's Day, swimming certificates A and B as standard milestones), and all data is stored on European servers under GDPR rules.
What sets Ouderliefde apart from Tinybeans:
- Co-parent feature. Both parents contribute from their own home, so your child gets one diary that includes both homes.
- School reports. Upload a photo of the report and the AI summarises the teacher's comments.
- Time capsule / letter at 18. Write a letter that's delivered automatically on your child's 18th birthday.
- Drawings archive. Digitise crafts and drawings separately from the photo timeline.
- Share links for grandparents. Grandparents follow along through their own secure link, which you can revoke at any time.
- GDPR-compliant. Data only on European servers, no adverts, no selling of data.
Ouderliefde is free to start (up to 20 memories). For unlimited use you choose Plus (€3.49/month) or Premium (€5.49/month), which makes the biggest difference in the first year, when something new comes along every day.
Baby Diaries: strong in the early years and in printed books
Baby Diaries is a Dutch-language app with a strong focus on the early years. What sets it apart is the option to order a professionally printed photo book. If you'd like a physical book alongside a digital diary, Baby Diaries is a good choice. For school-age children (4+) its features are more limited.
Famly, if your childcare uses it
Famly is a platform that many Dutch nurseries and after-school clubs use to communicate with parents. If your child goes to a nursery that uses Famly, you'll receive photos and updates there. You can't keep your own memories in it, so it doesn't work as a personal diary. As an extra, it's fine.
Switching from Tinybeans: how to keep everything
Tinybeans offers a data export that lets you download your photos as a zip file, organised by year. You can then import those photos into your new app.
In Ouderliefde you can upload photos retrospectively: you set the date to when the photo was taken, not the upload date. That way you rebuild the timeline in the right chronological order.
Which app suits you
Tinybeans works fine; it's just built for a different audience. If you're looking for an alternative that also works in Dutch with better privacy protection, co-parent support and Dutch cultural context, Ouderliefde is the logical choice.
You can start for free without payment details. That way you can judge for yourself whether the app fits the way you like to keep memories.
