Your best photos of your child are stuck in WhatsApp, and that's risky

The best photos of your child are probably in a chat. In the family group, or in the conversation with your partner where you drop something every week that you didn't want to forget.

Sending a message takes no effort. You take the photo and send it to the people who want to see it. But what you send is not the same as what you keep, and you only find that out when you try to look something up again.

Why WhatsApp is not an archive

Photos get shrunk. WhatsApp compresses every photo you send, heavily. On your phone screen you barely notice, but as soon as you want to print one or put it in a photo book, it shows: grainy, soft, little detail. The original is still in your camera roll. The photo grandma kept is the shrunken version.

A chat can't be searched for what you're looking for. Try finding that one photo of the first steps in a chat with ten thousand messages, three years from now. You can scroll by date, and that's it. You'll never find it again, even though it's still there.

One wrong tap and it's gone. Chat deleted, phone lost, a backup that quietly stopped working months ago. WhatsApp backups are designed to move your conversations to a new phone, not to last twenty years.

It's scattered. What you sent to grandma is in that chat, what you sent to your partner is in another, and the photos from nursery are in a third. There is no single place where your child's year is complete.

Save a whole chat in one go

The good news: you don't have to move hundreds of photos across by hand. WhatsApp can export an entire chat, media included, and you can import that export in one go.

Here's how:

  • In WhatsApp, open the chat with the most photos of your child.
  • Tap the name at the top and choose Export chat → Attach media.
  • You'll get a single ZIP file. Choose that file in Ouderliefde under import photos.

Want to see what comes out first? Drag your export into the free WhatsApp timeline. It runs in your own browser, without an account, and nothing is stored.

The important part is what happens next: the chat is read along with the photos. Each photo gets the date it was sent, and the message that came with it ("first swimming lesson!") becomes the caption. The result is a timeline that matches how things really happened, not a pile of loose files carrying today's upload date.

If the chat has no date for a photo, the date taken is read from the photo itself. And the unzipping happens in your own browser: only the photos you tick are uploaded, and the chat itself never leaves your phone.

After that: send and save at the same time

The hardest part is the habit. As long as saving means opening an app and hunting for an upload button, it happens a few times and then stops.

That's why you can link a WhatsApp number to your child. You send a photo the way you'd send it to grandma, and it appears in the timeline straight away, on the right date and with your message underneath. Videos, voice messages and short notes work too ("said 'daddy' for the first time today"). Grandparents get their own link, and you approve their photos before they land in the album.

Made a mistake? Reply to your own message in the chat with "verwijder" (Dutch for "delete") and it's gone.

What you end up with

All those separate messages become one continuous story per child: searchable, in order, in full quality, and shareable with whoever you choose. Exactly the overview that otherwise never gets made, because sorting it all out would cost you a full weekend.

You don't have to learn anything new. You only have to make sure that what you're sending anyway ends up somewhere it will still be in twenty years.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get my photos out of WhatsApp?

Open the chat, tap the name at the top and choose 'Export chat', then 'Attach media'. You'll get a ZIP file containing all the photos and the conversation. You can import that file into Ouderliefde, after which the photos appear in your child's timeline with the right date and the message that came with them.

Do my photos lose quality in WhatsApp?

Yes. WhatsApp compresses sent photos considerably so they send quickly. On a phone screen you hardly notice, but when printing or in a photo book the difference is clear. The original is usually still in your own camera roll; the recipient only has the smaller version.

Are the dates kept when importing?

Yes, that's the whole point. The chat file in the export is read too, so each photo gets the date it was sent and the accompanying message as its caption. If that information is missing, the date taken is read from the photo itself.

Are my WhatsApp messages sent to a server?

No. The ZIP file is unpacked and read in your own browser. Only the photos you tick are uploaded to your own private account; the chat itself never leaves your device.

Can grandparents send photos too?

Yes. They get their own link and can use it to send photos to the album. Their submissions go into a queue that you approve first, so nothing lands in the timeline without you seeing it.
